Singer- songwriter and guitarist, Merlinda Espinosa, has been singing and performing since she was a young child. Born and raised in Fresno, California, she continues to perform bringing great crowds with her soulful and “chill-inducing” voice. Her range of music includes Mexican traditional Rancheras, Nuevo Canto of Latin America, Country, folk, R&B and Jazz, as well as her own original repertoire, that has the sounds of the soulfulness of Motown and undertones of Latin rhythms. Sung in a very unique style in both English and Spanish, Merlinda’s song choices, appeal to all, hypnotizing even the youngest of heart.
At the age of 11, she began taking lessons in both voice and guitar with much encouragement from her parents. From there she joined with duo Agustin Lira and Patricia Wells- Solórzano, performing as the group “Alma” at local Chicano cultural events, local and state protest marches for Immigrant Rights, as well as colleges and universities state wide. She still joins “Alma” from time to time as a guest artist.
In March 2010, Merlinda performed in Teatro Inmigrante’s production of “Regeneracion,” honoring the work of Ricardo Flores Magon and celebrating the centennial anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. In “Regeneracion,” Merlinda played a number of demanding roles, including the role of Lucia Norman, which she played to rave reviews from The Fresno Bee. Of Merlinda, the Fresno Bee says, “She is a gem.”
A 2004 graduate of University High School, a school for gifted and talented students musically inclined, Merlinda studied musicology/music theory, excelling in all the arts of music, theatre, sculpture, painting and drawing. Achieving high standings in the statewide “Emerging Young Artist Awards Competition 2004,”
As a young adult and solo performing artist, Merlinda began to explore the sounds of other genres in English and Spanish, widening her repertoire and quickly becoming a veteran of Fresno’s Rogue Performance Festivals, as well as Cultural Festivals throughout the valley also including Art Hop and Jazz Hop in Fresno, California.
In August 2011, Merlinda opened for Bob Marley’s Wailers, a showcase of Dieheardz Productions, where she was joined by guitarist, Ricardo Guevera and drummer, Steve Warner where she performed all original music debuting her original song, “One Voice.”
In May 2013, Merlinda was featured in Central California’s Family First Magazine, “breaking cultural barriers and uniting people of all cultures and background with her music...”
In June 2013, she joins, Alex Belman, a native of Mexico City and now resident of Three Rivers, in a musical performance for the Fresno County Public Libraries “Bless me, Ultima.” This program, a musical performance with theatrical readings from excerpts from the book using music from throughout latin America was featured at libraries throughout the valley.
Currently, Merlinda performs regularly at venues in Fresno’s Historic Tower District and Downtown making appearances throughout California.
